THE GIRL
BEHIND THE
NAME
Maya Maran is a rising sophomore at Green Level High School, Cary, USA, and has always had a great passion for her Indian culture, and this all started when she began Bharatanatyam classes with Guru Smt. Karpagavalli Sai Sankar whom she fondly addresses as Kalpa Aunty, at the young age of 5 . Since then, she has performed Bharatanatyam at many cultural events such as Cary Diwali, India Fest, NavYug, Tamil Cultural Association, TATA and many others. She has also participated in all of Gurukrupa School of Indian Dance’s dance productions: Mahishasura Mardhini, Venkarathri Vaibhavam, Shambo Mahadeva, and Krishnarpanam. She also had the honor of completing her Salangai Pooja in July 2021.
Since she started this magical dance journey, she has performed at multiple family weddings as well. She relishes these opportunities to show off her skills as a dancer and appreciates all the support she has received along the way.
Apart from dancing, Maya has been very involved in the arts, particularly in music. She started learning piano at the young age of 4 and has played at recitals since, only recently stopping to focus on other pursuits. She also started learning classical violin in the summer of 2021 and is currently on a break, but hopes to take it back up soon.
More important to her musical journey, however, was the moment she decided to join her middle-school band and play trombone. In her own words, she likes it because “it is super slidey and I like that in an instrument.” She is continuing this passion to this day, as a member of the Green Level High School’s Concert Band and marching band, where she plays baritone. For those of you who don’t know, baritone looks like a big trumpet and sounds like a trombone.
Aside from music, Maya has a special passion for writing, and enjoys writing short stories and poems in her spare time. She is also in the process of writing a full-length novel she hopes to get published some day.
Maya is a huge history buff, as evidenced by the many History magazines lying around the house. She also loves to bake, and likes to experiment with different food items around the house. She particularly enjoys traveling with a burning passion, and hopes to see the entire world one day. That may be a big hope, but, once again in her own words, “it’s a big world and I have so much time to see it.”
Fund Raiser
Through her Arangetram, Maya would like to raise money for diabetes research through the American Diabetes Association in honor of her grandfathers. The ADA’s mission is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. They fund research to prevent, cure and manage diabetes, deliver services to hundreds of communities, provide objective and credible information, and give voice to those denied their rights because of diabetes. Maya requests her family and friends to join the fight against diabetes to support better futures for all people affected by diabetes.
